Dr. Shrestha is a senior Medical Epidemiologist with more than fifteen years of experience in the field of cancer, health care, and preventive medicine. At the national, regional, and local levels, he has been actively contributing to cancer prevention, awareness, and early detection programs. At NCHRC, he serves as Deputy Director of the Preventive Oncology Division, where he provides technical support for cancer awareness initiatives, cancer screening programs in Kathmandu valley and across various districts of Nepal, as well as health worker training and cancer research activities. He also plays a vital role in several hospital committees, including infection prevention and control (IPC), clinical governance, the hospital research board (HRB), and the medical record subcommittee. Academically, Dr. Shrestha earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Crimea Medical Institute, Simferopol, USSR (1985), followed by a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Epidemiology from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand (1993). He later pursued specialized training in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, USA (2003). In addition, he attended numerous national and international training programs on communicable and non-communicable diseases, outbreak investigation and response, disaster management, and related fields. Throughout his career, he has served in multiple significant roles, including working as a medical professional at district and central-level hospitals under the Government of Nepal/MoHP (1985–1995). He was Head of the Department of Cancer Prevention and Research at B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH), Bharatpur (1995–2005). He also served at WHO Country Office Nepal (2005–2011) and later as an international professional at WHO SEARO, New Delhi, India (2011–2013). His remarkable contributions have earned him several national and international recognitions. Dr. Shrestha strongly believes that the majority of cancers are preventable and treatable if addressed with timely education, awareness, and effective screening programs. As an active academician, he has been a reviewer for numerous national and international journals on health care, clinical trials, and cancer epidemiology. His research contributions include studies on genetic analysis of congenital ocular anomalies, cancer patient care during COVID-19, the impact of Japanese Encephalitis immunization in Nepal, effectiveness of cryotherapy techniques for cervical lesions, and several WHO-supported surveys and trials on non-communicable diseases. He is professionally affiliated as a Life Member of the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) and the Society of Public Health Physicians Nepal (SOPHYN). He is also a National Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Karnali Academy of Health Sciences and a Working Committee Member of the population-based cancer registry under the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC).
