Dr. Rishav Koirala is a Consultant Psychiatrist, researcher, and one of the pioneers of psycho-oncology in Nepal. He established the first Psycho-oncology Clinic of Nepal at Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center, and later expanded by opening two more psycho-oncology clinics in the country. He has been practicing in the field of mental health since 2011 and has completed his PhD on the effects of trauma from the University of Oslo, Norway. Deeply committed to advancing psycho-oncology and community psychiatry, he also serves as the Executive Manager of the Brain and Neuroscience Center (BANC) Nepal. Dr. Koirala has worked as the Focal Person for Mental Health at WHO Nepal, is an Associate Professor at People’s Medical College, and an Advisor for the Transcultural Psychosocial Organization Nepal. In addition, he has contributed significantly to psychiatric leadership in the country as the former Joint Treasurer of the Psychiatrist’s Association of Nepal, and has provided mental health services in several remote areas of Nepal. His specialized areas include Psycho-oncology, Trauma and Stress-related Disorders, and Addiction Psychiatry, while his personal interests lie in Yoga, Traditional Healing, and the Anthropology of Mental Health. Dr. Koirala has authored and co-authored numerous impactful publications in international journals, particularly in trauma psychiatry and the role of traditional healing in mental health care. His research has been published in journals such as PLOS ONE, Community Mental Health Journal, International Journal of Mental Health Systems, Culture Medicine and Psychiatry, and Ethos. He is a lifetime member of the Nepal Medical Council, the Psychiatrist’s Association of Nepal, and the Norway-Nepal Medical Society, and also a member of the American Psychiatric Association, reflecting his national and international engagement in advancing psychiatry and psycho-oncology.
